J. Arthur Snoke: Research

Research Interests

Earthquake seismology, both theoretical and observational. Specific areas of interest include crustal and upper mantle structure and computational seismology (most recently, crust and upper-mantle structure in the northwestern U.S., but historically seismic constraints on the geometry in subduction zones and the deep structure of continental shields along with the computational techniques used); network seismology (focal mechanisms, instrument calibration; and seismic source studies (interpretation of source and spectral parameters, seismic source scaling relations, temporal and spatial changes in seismicity in seismically active regions).

Since 2005, I, along with Brian Savage, have overseen the development and maintenance of the programming package SAC (Seismic Analysis Code), which is hosted and distributed through IRIS (Incorporated ResearchInstitutes for Seismology).

Between Spring 2000 and Fall 2003, I served as an associate editor for the IASPEI Centennial International Handbook of Earthquake and Engineering Seismology (William Lee Paul Jennings Carl Kisslinger Hiroo Kanamor, eds., Academic Press, San Diego, 2003). My specific task was to be the editor for a chapter on earthquake seismology software. This chapter has 18 subchapters, of which I am the author or coauthor of three. This chapter has short (2–4 page) summaries which are for the printed volume of the Handbook, plus computer program packages (for 14 of the subchapters) which are being placed on a CD to accompany the hard-copy volume. Two computer program packages I had developed that are presented in my sub-chapters are available through IRIS.

  • FOCMEC: FOCal MEChanism Package software for determining and displaying double-couple earthquake focal mechanisms. Input are polarities (P, SV, SH) and amplitude ratios (SV/P, SH/P, SV/SH). (Current version: 27 October 2017)

  • Iaspei-tau: software for building the traveltime tables for velocity models iasp91 and ak135
